Mark began playing at the age of 8 as a founder member of the BTM Band. He was initially
taught there by the Conductor of both the Junior and Senior Bands, Cynon Jones and
to this day, Mark is extremely grateful to him for the fantastic musical grounding
he provided. As with most players, Mark began on Cornet, later changing to Baritone
and eventually to Euphonium in 1981.
Since changing to Euphonium, Mark has established himself world-wide as one of the
finest exponents of this instrument. In 1987, he became the first ever Brass Instrumentalist
to win the coveted instrumental “blue riband” solo competition at the National Eisteddfod,
a feat he repeated in both 1988 and 1993. He became the British Open Solo Champion
in 1990, going on to represent Great Britain in the Brass International Musician
of the Year Contest held in Auckland, New Zealand where he came home with a very
creditable 2nd Prize. He has also featured as soloist on many Radio Broadcasts and
on the Band’s CDs as well as at concerts all over Europe.
Mark was also a founder member of the National Youth Band of Wales and has shared
(as Solo Euphonium) the dramatic rise and success, especially in the late 1980s
and 1990s, of the Bedwas, Trethomas & Machen (BTM) Band. They represented Wales
at 2 Europeans and at 10 National Championships since they gained Championship status
in 1985.
Mark is currently Bandmaster of the Senior Band and Conductor of the Junior Band
as well as still playing Solo Euphonium in both the Senior Band and the well known
BTM 10 piece Ensemble, made up of members from the Senior Band. A lot of Mark’s
arranging and composing skills have been honed by writing for this popular group
and he is now using that experience to good effect by turning his attentions to
the full Brass Band ensemble. |
