Karen hails from Neath, West Glamorgan. She has been married to her very understanding
and supportive husband, Simon, for 20 years, and has 2 children, Rebecca (16) and
Richard (14).
She began learning the cornet at the age of 10 under the direction of her father,
John Jones, and very soon after joined the Briton Ferry Silver Band playing alongside
her dad. Whilst at school Karen was taught and greatly influenced by Idris Rees.
For many years she played in the West Glamorgan Youth Brass Band, Youth Orchestra
and then the NYBBW. At the age of 15 Karen won the under 16 Trumpet solo competition
at the National Eisteddfod.
After leaving school Karen went to the Welsh College of Music and Drama where she
studied Trumpet with Robert Ferriman and Piano under the direction of Mary Rees.
She is currently working as a Piano/Brass Peripatetic teacher.
Her most memorable banding experiences have been playing at the National Finals
in the Albert Hall and listening to her son play his 1st xylophone solo at the BTM
band’s annual concert! |
