Tom Davoren originally hails from the picturesque
Gower peninsula in South Wales and is a graduate of the Music department at Cardiff University,
studying composition with Prof. Anthony Powers.
A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music
and Drama, Tom studied tuba with Nigel Seaman and has performed in master classes
with Canadian Brass, Onyx Brass, Oren Marshall and James Anderson.
During his time at RWCMD Tom was featured as a soloist both with
the college Wind Orchestra and for the 2006 Malcolm Arnold Celebrations. He was
also awarded much coveted performance placements with the BBC National Orchestra
of Wales and Welsh National Opera. During his college years he was also a member
of the Buy as You View (Cory) Band and the Flowers Band (formerly PolySteel), where he founded the Flowers Youth Band.
Tom is quickly developing a reputation as an exciting young composing
talent, working with the BTM band since the turn of 2008 he has written for concerts, contests,
CD releases and broadcast on BBC Radio 2. With his music for brass band performed
in the UK, Belgium and New Zealand, recent commissioners of Tom's work include the
Leyland Band, PolySteel (Flowers) Band, Pelorus Trust Wellington Band (N.Z.)
and noted soloists including Jonathan Pippen, Martin Britt, Carole Crompton and
Brett Baker. In
addition to this he has held composition residencies with
the Desford Colliery and BTM Bands and is currently published by Wright and Round Ltd. and Studio
Music Company. Outside the brass band world Tom has written for the Central Band
of the Royal Air Force, Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo (Halifax, Canada)
and was the brass band arranger and editor for the Welsh National
Opera’s Carbon 12: A Choral Symphony.
Tom’s conducting career came to fruition in 2008 when he founded the Flowers Youth Band. He quickly made his contesting debut with the Upper Rhondda
Brass Band and was proud to accept the position of Musical Director with the BTM Band in January
2009.
Tom is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Composition at Cardiff University.
Continuing his studies with Professor Anthony Powers, he is working under full scholarship
from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
